I get that this is probably more for me than them, BUT, I love Valentine's Day, and I love a cute toddler-friendly valentine. SO, here we are!
We recently re-introduced Olivia to dance class. We'd tried when she had just turned two, and it was - quite frankly - a disaster. I think, on some level, we all need to expect any sort of toddler activity to be chaotic and messy (take gymnastics. Their toddler class is basically one, big open gym. There's very little actual instruction). But when I say Olivia WAS the chaos and the mess, I'm not exaggerating. She was the child that made all the other children pretend to take naps on the mat rather than take part up at the barre, learning pliés (that said, she'll make a heck of a leader someday).
Fast forward 18 months.
We walked into a ballet class for 3-5-year-olds, and she immediately took her spot at the barre, hanging on her teacher's every word, participating with all the other little girls. I wondered, for a brief second, if someone had replaced my child with a look-a-like. But every class since has been just as wonderful, and it's clear she's found one of her great loves in life.
All of that to say, I knew I need to hunt down a good toddler valentine that would work for younger children, but would still be cute and speak to Olivia's new found love.
Meri Meri-inspired ballerina valentines
Enter: these ADORABLE Meri Meri-inspired toddler-friendly valentines, first posted by Sierra Miller (aka, my hero, in this scenario).
I'm an epically huge fan of all Meri Meri creates. I'm also a big fan of paying my bills, and Meri Meri isn't the cheapest (incredibly quality, and worth it at times, but I can't always afford it). So when I saw these, I fawned. I knew I'd have Olivia give these out to her ballet and neighborhood girlfriends, so I did what any parent would do - I took to Amazon to find some affordable velvet scrunchies.
Found em!
THESE gems come in the most gorgeous colors, and fit the cards, which I printed on THIS card stock, PERFECTLY. I was worried they'd be too heavy, and the card stock would bend. So far, so good. Sierra has these ballet valentines set up perfectly in a pdf document that prints the three different designs on one sheet (pdf download HERE). So for about $1 each, you have beautiful DIY toddler friendly valentines that, in my humble opinion are a notch above the store-bought valentines.
'wild about you' valentines
As cute as those ballet valentines were, I didn't feel like Olivia could give those to her guy friends (not that some boys wouldn't love them, but none of her guy friends are into dance), so for the select few, I went a different route.
I found these super cute "wild about you" toddler-friendly valentines, featuring little toy animals (NOTE: these could be a choking hazard if the kids are too young. Olivia's friends are 8, 6, and 4, so that wasn't a concern for us, but something to be aware of if you plan to make these). The only problem was this: the pdf link I kept finding on Pinterest took me to the same website that no longer existed.
Luckily, I know a thing or two about designing in Photoshop, so I created my own!
I put together a cute graphic (find the printable HERE) in a size that I thought would work perfectly, and ordered THESE little animals from Amazon. To tie an animal to each valentine, I used a small hole punch, just like THIS one, and used twine similar to THIS. It worked perfectly!
PAINT PALLET VALENTINES
I couldn't make valentines for Olivia to hand out, and not make some for Emilia to hand out (no, she's not two yet. Am I sounding crazy?)
One of Emilia's favorite things to do as of late is paint. And it hit me "who doesn't love to paint?!"
I love a good set of paints - especially paint that's easily washable. I found THESE paint pallets on (you guessed it) Amazon, and they came in a pack of 12 - just perfect to hit all the neighborhood kids that have been such kind friends to Emilia.
I also found THE most adorable, gender neutral (because these will be going to boys and girls) valentine printable by Pen + Paper Flowers, and fell in love. It has the beautiful sentiment "you add so much color to my world," which reminds me so much of my Emi girl (+ Livi girl, too). You can find the printable and instructions HERE.
I tied each paint pallet to the valentines in the same way I did Olivia's wild animal valentines - with a small hole punch and twine. Worked like a dream.
